A34 Kingsway Breakdown Recovery: South Manchester Guide

2026-02-25

The A34 Kingsway is one of South Manchester's most important dual-carriageway routes, connecting the city centre with the M56 and the Cheshire border. Here is what drivers need to know about breakdowns on this road.

The A34 Kingsway runs as a dual carriageway from the Hathersage Road junction in Withington south through Didsbury, Northenden, and Wythenshawe before connecting to the M56 at junction 3. It is the primary high-speed road artery for South Manchester and carries significant volumes of through traffic between the M56 and the city centre. Our Withington depot is positioned approximately 1 mile from the northern end of the Kingsway, giving us excellent response times to the full length of this road.

Breakdown Lay-By Availability

The A34 Kingsway dual carriageway has limited lay-by provision compared to a motorway hard shoulder. If you feel a problem developing, try to exit the dual carriageway at the next available slip road rather than stopping on the main carriageway. The junctions at Palatine Road, Northenden Road, and Simonsway all provide safe alternative stopping areas. If you cannot reach a junction, pull as far left as possible on the dual carriageway edge, switch on your hazard lights, and do not stand in the carriageway.

Direct Response from Withington

Our Withington depot can reach the northern end of the A34 Kingsway in approximately 5 minutes and the Northenden area in 10–15 minutes. The M56 junction 3 end is typically 20 minutes. Call 0161 5244759 for the fastest response on this road.
