Electric Vehicle Recovery in Greater Manchester: What's Different?

EV ownership in Manchester is growing fast — but recovering an electric vehicle requires different equipment, different procedures, and a recovery company that knows what they are doing. Here is everything EV owners need to know.

Electric vehicle registrations in Greater Manchester have grown substantially year on year, and EV owners now make up a meaningful proportion of the recovery callouts our teams attend across the region. However, electric vehicles present unique recovery challenges that standard towing procedures do not address — and using the wrong approach can cause serious, expensive, and in some cases irreversible damage to an EV. Here is what every electric vehicle owner in Greater Manchester needs to understand.

Why Standard Towing is Wrong for Most EVs

Most electric vehicles cannot be towed with the driven wheels on the ground — which is how a standard wheel-lift tow truck operates. The reason is fundamental to how EV powertrains work: the electric motor is directly connected to the driven wheels, and when those wheels rotate, the motor spins too. In many EVs, this generates electricity back into the battery — which is how regenerative braking works. However, if this happens at towing speeds with no thermal management active, it can overcharge the battery, overheat the motor, or trigger the battery management system in ways the manufacturer has not approved. In a worst-case scenario, it can cause battery thermal runaway — a serious fire risk.

The Simple Rule: EV + Flatbed

Unless the manufacturer's handbook explicitly states that the vehicle can be towed on a specified axle at a specified maximum speed for a specified maximum distance, treat all electric and most plug-in hybrid vehicles as flatbed-only. When in doubt, always choose the flatbed. Our recovery team will always confirm with you before dispatch.

Common EV Models and Their Recovery Requirements

  • Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X: Tesla explicitly prohibits towing with wheels on the ground. Flatbed only.
  • Nissan Leaf: Can be flat-towed in very specific neutral-tow conditions — but only by operators who know the procedure. Default to flatbed.
  • BMW i3, i4, iX: Flatbed only. The integrated motor design prohibits wheel-on-ground towing.
  • Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4: Flatbed only as per VW Group guidance.
  • Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5/6: Flatbed only.
  • Jaguar I-Pace: Flatbed only.
  • Plug-in hybrids (PHEV): Varies by model — check your handbook. Many can be towed in electric-drive disengaged mode, but confirming this with the operator is critical.

What If You Run Out of Charge?

Running out of charge — sometimes called 'bricking' by EV drivers — is the EV equivalent of running out of fuel. Unlike petrol vehicles, you cannot simply be given a roadside top-up of a few litres to get you to the next station. The practical solution in most cases is a flatbed recovery to the nearest appropriate charging station or to your home or workplace charger. Some roadside assistance providers now carry mobile charge units that can provide enough emergency range to reach a public charger, but this service is not yet universally available and takes time.

Greater Tow Services can recover a flat-battery EV to any destination in Greater Manchester and the wider North West — whether that is a public rapid charger, a dealership, your home, or a specialist EV repair centre. Our flatbed fleet is available at all five depots 24 hours a day.

EV Battery Fire Incidents

Battery thermal events in electric vehicles — though statistically rare compared to ICE vehicle fires — require specialist handling. If you ever smell burning or see smoke from your EV, exit the vehicle immediately and move at least 50 metres away. Do not attempt to open the bonnet. Call 999 immediately and then call us. Our recovery teams do not approach a burning or recently extinguished EV without fire service clearance, and any EV that has been involved in a thermal event requires specialist disposal rather than standard recovery.

If you drive an electric or hybrid vehicle in Greater Manchester, save the number of your nearest Greater Tow Services depot and make sure any breakdown cover you carry explicitly states that it covers electric vehicle flatbed recovery. Some cheaper breakdown policies still only include wheel-lift towing, which is simply not appropriate for most EVs.
