Flatbed vs Standard Tow Truck: Which Does Your Car Need?

Not every recovery job requires the same equipment. Understanding the difference between a flatbed transporter and a standard tow truck could save you time, money, and potential damage to your vehicle.

When you call a recovery company, the operator will ask questions about your vehicle and its situation — not just to be thorough, but because the type of truck dispatched matters enormously. Using the wrong equipment can damage your vehicle further, create safety risks, or lead to a second recovery call-out. Here is a straightforward guide to understanding which recovery method is right for your situation.

What is a Standard Tow Truck (Wheel Lift)?

A standard tow truck — sometimes called a hook-and-chain or wheel-lift truck — lifts either the front or rear wheels of your vehicle off the ground while the other pair remains on the road. This is faster to deploy than a flatbed and is the most common recovery method for everyday breakdowns. The vehicle is secured at the axle and towed at road speed. Standard tow trucks are the right choice for the majority of everyday recovery jobs: a car that has broken down on the motorway, a vehicle locked out of gear, or a standard family car that needs moving to a nearby garage.

What is a Flatbed Transporter?

A flatbed transporter carries the entire vehicle on a flat platform — all four wheels are off the road surface. The vehicle is driven or winched onto the bed and secured with straps or wheel chocks. The flatbed is slower to load and more expensive to operate, but it is the correct and in some cases only safe option for many types of vehicle.

When You Need a Flatbed — No Exceptions

  • All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles: On many modern AWD systems, towing with two wheels on the ground can damage the drivetrain, differential, or transfer case. Always use a flatbed unless the manufacturer explicitly states otherwise.
  • Vehicles with damaged or non-functional suspension: If a corner of the vehicle is collapsed, a standard lift risks further structural damage.
  • Low-clearance and sports cars: Ground clearance under approximately 100mm often makes standard recovery impossible without scraping the underside. Flatbed loading via ramps or winch avoids this.
  • Prestige and classic cars: Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche, classic Jaguars and similar — these require flatbed handling to avoid paint or body damage from straps and to protect the drivetrain.
  • Electric and hybrid vehicles (most models): Many EV manufacturers explicitly prohibit towing with wheels on the ground. See our separate guide on EV recovery.
  • Accident-damaged vehicles: If the vehicle has structural damage, a standard lift may worsen it or compromise towing stability.
  • Motorcycles: Almost always transported on a flatbed or specialist trailer — never towed on a wheel lift.

When a Standard Tow Truck Is Fine

  • Standard rear-wheel or front-wheel drive cars with no drivetrain or suspension damage.
  • Engine, electrical, or fuel failures where the vehicle is otherwise structurally intact.
  • Short-distance moves to a nearby garage or secure compound.
  • Vehicles being moved from a restricted or dangerous location quickly.
Not Sure Which You Need? Just Tell Us Your Vehicle.

When you call Greater Tow Services, simply tell us the make, model, year, and drivetrain of your vehicle (front-wheel, rear-wheel, all-wheel drive). Our dispatch team will automatically select the correct vehicle for your recovery — you do not need to know the answer yourself. We would rather ask the right questions upfront than send the wrong truck.

All five Greater Tow Services depots across Greater Manchester carry both standard tow trucks and flatbed transporters, available 24 hours a day. Flatbed availability is included in our standard pricing — you will not be charged a premium simply because your vehicle requires a flatbed.
