Flood-Damaged Vehicle Recovery in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester experiences significant flooding events along the Irwell, Mersey, and Irk river corridors. If your vehicle has been caught in a flood or submerged, the recovery and post-flood process is very different from a standard breakdown.

Greater Manchester's rivers — the Irwell, Mersey, Irk, Medlock, and Croal — run through the heart of the conurbation, and their flood plains include significant road networks. The flooding events of 2015, 2019, and subsequent years demonstrated how quickly residential and commercial areas can be inundated, trapping vehicles and causing severe damage. Our teams have extensive experience with flood recovery operations across the region.

Do Not Drive Into Floodwater

The most important piece of advice for flood events is not to drive into standing or moving floodwater, regardless of how shallow it appears. As little as 30cm of moving floodwater can move a car. Modern vehicles, particularly EVs, can suffer catastrophic and permanent electrical damage from flood immersion even at depths that appear manageable. If your road is flooded and you are unsure of the depth, do not enter. Turn around and find an alternative route, then call us if you are already in difficulty.

If Your Vehicle Is Already in Floodwater

If your vehicle has stalled or become trapped in floodwater, exit the vehicle immediately if the water level is rising or moving. Do not attempt to restart the engine — water ingestion into the intake will cause immediate and severe engine damage (hydrolock). Once safe, call our team with your precise location. We carry specialist flood recovery equipment including extended winch lines and waterproof clothing for our operators, and are experienced in extracting vehicles from flooded locations.

Post-Flood Vehicle Assessment

Even if your vehicle was only partially submerged and appears to have survived, a post-flood assessment is essential before attempting to drive it. Floodwater — particularly in urban areas — contains sewage, chemicals, and abrasive sediment that can damage brakes, suspension components, and electronics. Battery and ECU components are particularly vulnerable. Your insurer will typically want an approved engineer's assessment before authorising repair costs. We can transport your vehicle to any specialist repairer or assessment point across Greater Manchester.
