Jump Start vs Towing: When Do You Actually Need a Recovery Truck?

Not every breakdown needs a tow truck. But not every battery failure can be fixed with a jump start either. Here is how to tell the difference — and why getting it wrong can cost you.

A flat battery is the most common cause of breakdown callouts in the UK. In many cases, a jump start from our roadside van or a portable jump pack will get your vehicle running and on your way within 10 minutes. But in some cases, a jump start is not appropriate, not safe, or simply will not solve the underlying problem. Here is how to distinguish them.

When a Jump Start Is the Right Answer

  • The battery has been drained by leaving lights on, accessories running, or a long period of non-use.
  • The battery is less than 3 years old and has failed without warning.
  • The vehicle starts and runs normally after the jump — the alternator is charging the battery.
  • You can drive directly to a garage or battery retailer to have the battery tested and replaced if necessary.

When a Jump Start Is NOT the Answer

  • The vehicle starts after a jump but cuts out again within a few miles — suggests alternator failure, not battery failure.
  • The battery is over 4 years old — a jump will get you moving but the battery will fail again soon, potentially in a more dangerous location.
  • Modern vehicles with many ECUs (especially European luxury brands) can react badly to the voltage spike of a jump start — consult the handbook.
  • Electric vehicles should never be jump-started — they have 12V auxiliary batteries but the procedure is entirely different from an ICE vehicle.
  • The problem is not the battery at all — if the engine turns over but will not fire, or if there is a different electrical fault, a jump start will not help.

When you call Greater Tow Services for a battery-related breakdown, our team will assess whether a jump start is appropriate or whether you need to be towed to a garage for a proper diagnostic. We carry jump packs in our roadside assistance vans and flatbeds in our recovery trucks — whichever you need, we have it available.
