The M66 is North Greater Manchester's primary motorway, running north from the M60 through Bury and into the Rossendale Valley. Our Manchester North depot covers the entire Greater Manchester section.
The M66 runs north from the M60 ring road at junction 17 through Bury town centre and on towards Ramsbottom and the Lancashire border. It is one of the less frequently discussed motorways in Greater Manchester but carries significant commuter traffic between the Rossendale Valley and Manchester city centre. The motorway passes through predominantly suburban and semi-rural landscape, with the terrain becoming increasingly hilly north of Bury.
Our Manchester North depot covers the M66 from the M60 junction 17 interchange north to the Lancashire county boundary. Junction 1 and 2 in the Ramsbottom area represent the outer edge of our response zone, with typical response times of 35–45 minutes. Junctions 3–5 in the Bury area are typically 20–30 minutes. The M60/M66 interchange itself is attended in 15–20 minutes. Beyond the Lancashire boundary, we will still respond but callout times will be extended.
The M66 north of Bury rises through the Irwell Valley and can experience snow and ice conditions significantly earlier and more severely than the lowland motorways around Manchester city centre. Our Manchester North team carries winter recovery equipment and is experienced in attending M66 incidents in adverse weather.
