Emergency Towing in Wigan and Leigh: Far Western Greater Manchester

Greater Tow Services

2026-03-15

Wigan and Leigh are the westernmost significant towns in Greater Manchester, connected to the rest of the region via the M6, M61, and A580 East Lancashire Road. Here is what drivers in this area need to know.

Wigan and Leigh sit at the far western edge of Greater Manchester, closer in geography to the Lancashire coalfield than to Manchester city centre. The primary road connections are the A580 East Lancashire Road, the M6 motorway to the north of Wigan, and the M61 connection south to the M60. Our Salford depot is the primary responder for this area, and while Wigan and Leigh sit at the outer edge of our response zone, we provide full 24/7 coverage to all Greater Manchester postcodes including the WN postcode district.

A580 East Lancashire Road Recovery

The A580 is one of the oldest strategic A-roads in the North West, running as a dual carriageway from the M60 near Eccles all the way west to Walton-le-Dale near Preston. It carries significant freight and commuter traffic and is one of our most attended roads west of Salford. Breakdown response times on the A580 are typically 25–40 minutes from our Salford depot depending on traffic and the exact location between M60 junction 13 and the Leigh/Wigan boundary.

M6 and Wigan Town Coverage

The M6 passes through the Wigan area at junctions 25–27 and carries some of the heaviest freight volumes on the UK motorway network. For M6 breakdowns within the Greater Manchester metropolitan boundary, we dispatch from Salford with a typical response time of 35–45 minutes to M6 junctions 25–26. Wigan town centre and the inner residential areas of Orrell, Pemberton, and Ince-in-Makerfield are attended via the M58 and A49 approaches.
